An armed robber, Akeem Oladehinde, has been sentenced to death by Justice Nasiru Agbelu of an Ogun State High Court sitting in Sagamu.

Justice Agbelu ordered the execution of Oladehinde over conspiracy to commit robbery in the state.

Agbelu, while delivering judgment on Thursday, said that the convict should not be allowed to return to society in order to avoid further security threats to the nation.

Republican Nigeria gathered that Oladehinde and others at large had been arraigned on a seven-count charge of conspiracy to commit robbery at Oluke and two other villages in Ado-Odo Ota Local Government Area of Ogun State on July 26, 2014.

After his arrest, Oladehinde was said to have admitted committing the crime alongside those who were killed during a gun duel with the police.

However, when he appeared before the court, Oladehinde pleaded not guilty to the charges brought against him.

During his trial, he had claimed being wrongly accused as a member of the robbery syndicate.

But, Justice Agbelu, in his judgment ruled that the prosecution had proved his case beyond any reasonable doubt as far as the convict’s involvement in plotting the robbery incident was concerned.

The judge said, “The defendant counsel pleaded that the accused is a family man and that he should be given another opportunity to change his life after.

“It is to be observed that the state of our security in the country is very worrisome and the incident of armed robbery is now very prevalent.

“The defendant should not be allowed to be back to society and continue to traumatise fellow citizens. However, the punishment for conspiracy is the one punishable by death.”
