Victor Osimhen is now a major doubt for next year’s Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon after his Italian club side Napoli revealed the extent of the injury that forced Nigeria international off in the Serie A clash with Inter Milan on Sunday.
The 22-year-old had to leave the match in the 50th minute after a clash of heads with Inter’s defender Milan Skriniar caused him to have a swollen eye and cheekbone.
Tests from the hospital, confirmed by Napoli, revealed Osimhen suffered a fractured orbit and cheekbone and the former Lille star is expected to undergo surgery in a few days.
Meanwhile, United Kingdom-based Trauma and Orthopaedic consultant ,has revealed that facial bones injury take an estimated time of six weeks to completely heal and as the AFCON starts in January 9, this leaves Osimhen with just five weeks to be ready for Africa’s biggest football showpiece.
“Reports suggested he has displaced orbital and cheek bone fracture. Facial bones are estimated to heal completely in about 6 weeks. In cases of displaced fractures, surgery is done to align the bones to allow for adequate healing,” the doctor revealed. “The surgery is also done in case of any vision threatening presentation or to fix broken fragments trapping the eye muscles.
“We have to pray for Victor. Some go blind with this kind of injury. I read that his coach said he couldn’t see after it happened,” he added.
Apart from being doubtful for the AFCON, Osimhen would definitely miss Napoli’s crunch Europa league ties against Spartak Moscow (Nov 24) and Leicester City (Dec 9) and top of the table Serie A clashes against Lazio (Nov 28), Atalanta (Dec 4) and Milan (Dec 19).
Meanwhile, Italian giants Inter Milan have sent a get-well-soon message to Victor Osimhen after the
“Come on champion, we look forward to seeing you on the pitch!” the reigning Serie A champions wrote on Twitter.
